Murshidabad Violence: BJP’s Suvendu Calls For Bengal Poll Under ‘President’s Rule’ As Sukanta Visits Relief Camp

West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday demanded elections under President's Rule in areas where Hindus are in the minority. The demands came after the violence triggered by protests against the Waqf Amendment Act in Murshidabad.

He also demanded a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the violence, calling it "anti-national activities." Adhikari has moved the Calcutta High Court, requesting the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad in response to rising unrest. The violence, sparked by protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, has already led to three deaths and several injuries.

"I have this in my petition that after such explosions and firing incidents, the NIA should investigate (in Murshidabad) as these are anti-national activities... Wherever Hindus are in the minority, they don't let Hindus vote, and hence, the Elections must be held under president rule for the sake of democracy," he said, news agency ANI reported.

BJP president Sukanta Majumdar Visits Relief Camp In Malda 

Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar also visited a relief camp in Malda district on Monday, where numerous families from Murshidabad have taken shelter after fleeing due to violence.

Majumdar, who is also the Union Minister of State for Education, toured the temporary shelter set up at Paralalpur High School in Kaliachak Block 3, where he met with displaced residents, including many women and children.

Local authorities confirmed that around 640 people have taken refuge in Malda, and of those, 550 are currently staying in the high school camp, while others have been accommodated in nearby villages with their relatives. "Many women broke down while recounting their ordeal," Majumdar told news agency PTI following his visit.

"Their homes were torched, property destroyed, and they received life threats. One woman has taken refuge here with her four-day-old baby," he added.

The violence which erupted on Friday in the Muslim-dominated Murshidabad's Dhulian area over the Waqf Amendment Bill claimed three lives and injured several.

Majumdar accused that the attacks were done by "fundamentalist forces" posing as protestors."Initially, 200-250 families had taken shelter here. Now, due to police pressure to shut down the camp and cover up Mamata Banerjee's failure, only 70-75 families remain. They are still living in fear," Majumdar claimed.

However, refuting the allegation made by Majumdar, a senior police officer said that they cannot force anyone to return. "We have only assured and given confidence that we will ensure their safety and security, which we will do," he said.

In response to overseeing relief measures, the local administration, led by a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and a Block Development Officer (BDO), has been visiting the area.

Tocal panchayat head Sulekha Chowdhury confirmed that the relief camp has been equipped with cooked food, drinking water, sanitation, and regular visits by doctors. Ten BSF personnel have been stationed for security, although mobile internet remains suspended in the region.

Majumdar alleged that the state government was biased, saying, "The police restrained central forces from acting independently." He said the BJP would approach the court to ensure central forces can function independently in troubled zones.

"The situation in Murshidabad could be a precursor to similar unrest elsewhere in the state. Minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury has already issued a warning. Mamata Banerjee has turned Bengal into another Bangladesh," he said.

He also questioned whether the displaced would be represented in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s upcoming meeting with Muslim clerics in Kolkata on April 16.

Later, Majumdar launched a dedicated control room at the Malda BJP district office to streamline relief coordination and gather details from those impacted. He reassured affected families of the BJP’s continued support and said he would visit his ancestral home in the district later that day.

Sharing the photo of his visit on social media platform X, Majumdar wrote, "In Murshidabad, Hindus have been rendered homeless due to brutal attacks by Trinamool-backed jihadi forces. Forced to flee their own homes, many have taken shelter in Malda's Paralalpur High School grounds. Today, I met these displaced Hindu families. We stand firmly with them in this time of crisis. We will never tolerate jihadi brutality against the innocent Bengali Hindus of West Bengal."

Further, he added that the BJP will soon launch statewide protests and will continue updating the ground situation to the Union Home Ministry.
