Heatwave Alert Issued In Mumbai As Temperature Soars Beyond 38°C

A yellow heatwave warning has been issued for Mumbai and surrounding areas for February 25-26, with temperatures expected to exceed 38°C, significantly higher than normal February temperatures.

A yellow warning has been issued for a heat wave in Mumbai and nearby areas for today and tomorrow as the highest temperatures are expected to breach the 38 degrees Celsius mark again, which is nearly 5 degrees Celsius above normal temperature for the month of February, IMD Mumbai said.

The city is experiencing extreme heat, prompting the regional meteorological department to issue a heatwave warning for February 25-26.  On Monday, the temperature soared to 38.4 degrees Celsius in the Santacruz area, marking the highest February temperature recorded in the past five years, reported The Times Of India. The last time the city experienced such high temperatures in February was on February 28, 2020.

According to data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the Santacruz observatory registered a maximum temperature of 38.4 degrees Celsius — 6.4 degrees above normal. Meanwhile, the IMD Colaba observatory recorded 36.8 degrees Celsius, exceeding the usual levels by 6.2 degrees.

Authorities have also placed Thane and Raigad in the Konkan area under a heatwave alert as the region continues to endure unusually high temperatures.

IMD scientist Sushma Nair on Tuesday was quoted as saying by news agency PTI: "The temperatures are likely to be in the range of 37 to 38 degrees Celsius for the next two days.   The heatwave alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri on February 25 and 26, the IMD said."

Is Winter Over In Mumbai?

According to The Indian Express, March usually marks the beginning of the summer in Mumbai. The usual winter season in Mumbai lasts from November to early February.

Temperatures usually fluctuate in February as this is the transition period between the winter and the summer. The IMD, so far, has no date for the end of winter. December 2024 was the coldest in 8 years, and then February recorded the warmest day of the month in 5 years.
