Navi Mumbai: A 44-year-old man died while seven others were injured after a swarm of bees attacked tourists at Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Navi Mumbai. The victim, Sandeep Purohit, had visited the sanctuary with his wife, son and family friends for a trek to Karnala Fort on Saturday.
After getting a distress call, forest officials reached the area in about half an hour. They found the tourists on the ground trying to evade the bee sting, while Purohit was unconscious after injuring his head in an attempt to flee.
"The bees usually attack only when someone does something to them. What would have gone wrong is being investigated. An accidental death report has been filed," senior police inspector Gajanan Ghadge said.
Hospital officials said Purohit was brought dead but the cause of the death can be confirmed only after the report of histopathology examination.
"In multiple sting trauma, sometimes an allergic reaction can lead to cardiac arrest. Purohit had some minor abrasions on the forehead. The opinion is kept reserved as of now and the cause of death can be confirmed only after histopathology examination for which the samples are being sent to Sion Hospital," Superintendent Dr Ashok Gite from Panvel sub-district hospital said.
A total of 10 people received stings including the wife and son of the deceased.
