Maharashtra Violence: 50 Arrested In Parbhani, Police Likely To Net More Suspects

Parbhani DM Raghunath Gavande said the main accused was arrested on December 10. Police are investigating if anyone else is involved.

Parbhani Violence: Violent protests took place in the city of Parbhani in central Maharashtra on Wednesday for the second day in protest against the damage to a replica of the Indian Constitution. Prohibitory orders were imposed there after the violence and internet was shut down. Meanwhile, Parbhani District Magistrate Raghunath Khandu has given information about the situation there. He also said that 50 people have been arrested so far in this case.

Parbhani DM Raghunath Khandu Gavde said, "The SP and I went there and explained to the workers there and paid homage to the statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution. On December 10, it all happened peacefully. However, on Wednesday, December 11, they were going to hold a symbolic protest, but after 12-12.30 PM, roads were blocked at several places and arson was also reported at some places. Stone-pelting also took place. After that, the police resorted to lathicharge and also fired teargas shells."

'Law And Order Under Control'

DM Gavde further said that the police have arrested about 50 people and FIRs were also registered against them. "A company of SRPF is also present in the city and adequate police force has been deployed. Therefore, law & order is under control. There is no problem. During this, five to six policemen were slightly injured, some police vehicles were also damaged and private property was vandalised," he said.

He further said, "The main accused was arrested on December 10 and a case was registered against him. He is in police custody. If there is anyone behind it, the police are investigating it. Strict action will be taken. About 100 women and girls entered my chamber. There was a system here but we could not use force on women. So, our team tried to convince them, but they were not ready to listen to us. They broke some of my chairs and tore files. They were taken out after additional police force arrived."

On Thursday, police personnel held a flag march in central Maharashtra's Parbhani city where violence broke out on Wednesday over the alleged vandalising of a replica of the Indian constitution.

'Footage And Videos Available'

The District Magistrate said that the police have a lot of evidence, CCTV footage and videos. "Action is being taken only after careful scrutiny and proper investigation. Action is not being taken against those who were not involved. Currently, the SP here is looking into the matter and the DIG Nanded is also camping here. The investigation is being done under their supervision," Gavde said.
