Maharashtra Govt Declares Indigenous Cows As 'Rajya Mata-Gomata', Introduces Subsidy Scheme For Goshalas

The Maharashtra government has declared indigenous cows as "Rajya Mata-Gomata". It also announced a subsidy scheme for Goshalas to strengthen the rearing of indigenous cows.

The Maharashtra government on Monday declared indigenous (desi) cows as 'Rajya Mata-Gomata', citing their significance since the Vedic period, according to an official notification. The decision underscores the spiritual, scientific, and historical importance of cows in Indian society, especially their integral role in agriculture and human nutrition, an official said.

An official notification from the state Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Department emphasised several factors behind the move, including the nutritional value of indigenous cow milk, its use in Ayurvedic and Panchgavya treatments, and the agricultural benefits of cow manure in organic farming.

The state government’s decision comes ahead of the state assembly elections due in November. According to news agency PTI, an official explained, "By taking this decision, the state government has underscored the agricultural benefits of cow dung, which enhances soil fertility and contributes to human nutrition."

Additionally, the Maharashtra Cabinet, presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, announced the implementation of a subsidy scheme. Under this scheme, Goshalas will receive Rs 50 per day for the rearing of indigenous cows.

"Since the Goshalas could not afford it due to their low income, the decision was taken to strengthen them. This scheme will be implemented online by the Maharashtra Goseva Commission. Each district will have a District Goshala Verification Committee," Maharashtra Chief Minister's Office stated, as per news agency ANI.

According to the 20th animal census in 2019, the number of indigenous cows in Maharashtra stands at 46,13,632, a decline of 20.69 percent compared to the previous census, the CMO added.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked, "Indigenous cows are a boon for our farmers. So, we have decided to grant this ('Rajya Mata') status to them. We have also decided to extend help for the rearing of indigenous cows at Goshalas."

Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha further elaborated, "The Maharashtra government has decided to provide a subsidy for indigenous cows at Goshalas registered with the Goseva Aayog. This will provide great support for the protection and rearing of indigenous cows in Maharashtra. With this, Goshalas will also be able to function properly."

The elections to 288-member Maharashtra assembly are expected to be held in the month of November as the term of the current House ends on November 26.
