Kolkata Police Forms 5-Member SIT To Probe Law College Gang-Rape Case

A 24-year-old student of the South Calcutta Law College was allegedly raped by three persons, including an alumnus in the guard's room on June 25. All of them have been arrested.

Kolkata Police has formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law college student. The SIT has been formed under the supervision of ACP Pradip Kumar Ghosal, SSD, news agency ANI reported.

The three accused, Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, have been remanded to police custody till July 1. Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested the security guard of the college, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four.

Police said the security guard was arrested as he failed to carry out his duty, and his replies were found to be incoherent. In her written complaint to the police, the survivor alleged that the security guard did not help her.

"The guard has been inconsistent with his answers on why he did not act accordingly and stopped the three accused from committing the crime. Also, he needs to reply on why and whose instructions he left his room. This is also a kind of involvement in the crime," an officer told news agency PTI.

A 24-year-old student of the South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped by three persons, including an alumnus of the institution, in the guard's room on June 25. Following her complaint, the police arrested all three accused.

Results of the medical examination conducted on the victim have also corroborated her gang-rape allegation.

Earlier today, Kolkata Police stated in a post on X, that attempts are being made by "certain unscrupulous elements" to give a "communal colour" to the alleged gang-rape incident.

"Such actions are not only misleading but also aimed at disturbing public order. Stringent legal action shall be taken against those spreading false narratives with malicious intent," it said.

The post further said that all appropriate legal and investigative measures have been taken in connection with the case, and that the "investigation is progressing strictly in accordance with the law."

The TMC has denied having any connection with the prime accused and has sought "severe punishment" if he is found guilty. The guard's room and union room, linked to the crime, have been sealed and the college campus is under tight police surveillance.
