In a significant move towards sustainability, the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust has decided to impose a complete ban on plastic usage within the temple premises. The decision was finalised during a trust meeting held on Sunday, just days ahead of the holy month of Sawan, which begins on July 11.
According to the temple authorities, the ban will come into full effect from August 10, after the conclusion of the Sawan month, when the temple typically sees a massive influx of devotees.

Devotees Throng Kashi During Sawan
Every year, millions of devotees visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple during Sawan to offer prayers and sacred water to Lord Shiva. In anticipation of this rush, the temple administration is launching a campaign to make the premises plastic-free starting this season.
Chief Executive Officer Vishwabhushan Mishra said the temple trust had resolved in December 2024 to prohibit plastic within the complex. Now, with the plan set in motion, awareness drives will be conducted during Sawan to educate pilgrims about the new rules.
No Entry With Plastic-Laden Offerings
From August 10 onwards, devotees will not be allowed to enter the temple carrying any plastic material, including packaging used for offerings like flowers, milk, water, or garlands. The administration will urge visitors to use eco-friendly alternatives.
Campaigns on social media and on-site advisories will be used to educate and remind devotees about the plastic ban. Single-use plastics have already been prohibited, and this full-scale ban is expected to help preserve the temple environment and promote sustainable practices.
Devotees practice many rituals during this month, including Rudrabhishek, chanting of mantras, observing fasting, and more. Among all these rituals, one of the major rituals is offering Bel Patra, or Bilva leaf, to Lord Shiva.
