BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal Leaves Temple Inauguration After Backlash Over Waqf Remarks
Amid Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal 's address, members of the audience highlighted that local Muslims had contributed Rs 6 lakh towards its development.
BJP leader and Vijayapura MLA, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, left a temple inauguration event in Terdal, Bagalkot district, on November 11, 2024, after facing opposition from the audience for discussing political issues. Yatnal, who was invited to the inauguration of the Allammaprabhu temple, began speaking about an alleged attempt by the Waqf Board to take over eight acres of land from a farmer he knew.
However, as he broached the topic, several attendees interjected, requesting him to refrain from discussing politics at the religious event, as reported by The Hindu.
When Yatnal questioned whether the Waqf Board issue was a political one, the crowd responded affirmatively. Members of the audience highlighted the collaborative nature of the temple construction, pointing out that local Muslims had contributed Rs 6 lakh towards its development, reported PTI. Attendees urged him to focus on the significance of the temple and Allama Prabhu rather than political topics. As he continued to address the Waqf Board issue, the crowd expressed their displeasure, leading Yatnal to halt his speech abruptly and leave the venue visibly upset.

The event follows recent government directives concerning land records and the Waqf Board. The Karnataka government, under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has warned of disciplinary action against officials altering land mutation records or issuing eviction notices under the Waqf Act. Revenue Department Principal Secretary Rajender Kumar Kataria reminded district authorities that all previous directions regarding changes to land records in favour of the Karnataka Board of Waqfs have been withdrawn.
