Is Delhi's Tughlaq Lane Now Vivekananda Marg? BJP MPs Modify Address Of Govt Bungalows

Following the BJP's election victory in Delhi, some MPs have modified the addresses of their official residences on Tughlaq Lane to "Vivekanand Marg".

After the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years, demands to rename several locations in the city have been gaining momentum. Amid this, Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma has sparked controversy by changing the address on the nameplate at his official residence. The nameplate, which previously read "6 Tughlaq Lane", has now been modified to read "6 Vivekanand Marg". "Tughlaq Lane" is written in a small font at the bottom.

It is not just Sharma. Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar has also changed the nameplate. The address on the nameplate of his official bungalow now reads "8 Vivekanand Marg".

Dinesh Sharma was allotted the official residence at 6 Tughlaq Lane, where he recently moved in with his family. He performed a housewarming ceremony and shared pictures of the event online.

New Nameplate Reads 'Swami Vivekananda Marg'

On Thursday, March 6, the former Deputy CM of Uttar Pradesh and current Rajya Sabha MP formally shifted into his residence following a religious ritual with his family. The pictures he posted on social media platform X show him with his family, with the new nameplate clearly visible in the background. The plate prominently displays "Swami Vivekananda Marg," although "Tughlaq Lane" is still mentioned in smaller text below.

Sharing the pictures, Sharma wrote, "Today, I performed a religious ceremony and moved into my new residence at Swami Vivekananda Marg (Tughlaq Lane) in New Delhi with my family."

Interestingly, several other MPs also reside in the same area, and their houses still retain the "Tughlaq Lane" address. However, Sharma has taken it upon himself to rename his residence, sparking curiosity and discussions.

Has Tughlaq Lane Been Renamed To Vivekanand Marg?

Tughlaq Lane has not been renamed, nor is there any official plan to do so immediately. Then why did Dinesh Sharma change the name on the plaque?

Sharma said Tughlaq Lane is still written on the nameplate. "But along with that, 'Vivekanand Marg' is written because on Google [Maps], this street is registered as 'Vivekanand Road'... No MP can change the names of the roads. There is a proper authority for it [renaming roads]."

Calls To Rename Mustafabad And Najafgarh

Sharma’s move comes at a time when BJP legislators are proposing changing the names of Mustafabad and Najafgarh. Mohan Singh Bisht, the BJP MLA from Mustafabad, suggested renaming the area as "Shivpuri" or "Shiv Vihar". Najafgarh MLA Neelam Pehlwan has also raised demands for changing the area's name to 'Nahargarh'.
