Hyderabad Metro’s Next Big Upgrade — Skywalks At Every Station for Safer, Faster Travel

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited is constructing skywalks at all metro stations to improve pedestrian safety and ease urban mobility.

In a major push to improve pedestrian safety and ease urban mobility, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has announced plans to construct skywalks at all metro stations. This initiative aims to provide seamless connectivity, reducing congestion and ensuring safer movement for commuters and residents alike, reported India Today.

Navigating Hyderabad’s bustling streets can be challenging, especially in high-traffic zones. The introduction of skywalks at every metro station will allow pedestrians to move freely above congested roads, minimising the risk of accidents and improving accessibility. These elevated walkways will integrate key commercial and residential areas, making daily commutes smoother and safer.

HMRL Managing Director NVS Reddy said that these skywalks would significantly improve pedestrian safety while complementing public transport infrastructure. By linking metro stations with surrounding facilities, the initiative is expected to streamline urban travel and alleviate road traffic.

Several skywalk projects are already in development across Hyderabad, including:

  • Dr. Ambedkar Balanagar Metro Station: A skywalk is being constructed to connect the station with Phoenix Landmark Mall, ensuring direct and hassle-free access for commuters and shoppers.
  • LB Nagar Station: Another skywalk is in progress to link the station with the Vasavi Anandanilayam complex, a residential hub comprising 12 towers with 33 floors each, benefiting thousands of residents.
  • Punjagutta, Hitec City, and Irrum Manzil Stations: These stations already feature skywalks that connect directly to adjacent malls, enhancing convenience for metro users.

HMRL is also looking to extend the skywalk network to additional stations, including Nagole, Stadium (Uppal), Durgam Cheruvu, and Kukatpally

This expansion aligns with the city’s broader vision of integrating metro stations with commercial and residential hubs, fostering a more pedestrian-friendly environment across Hyderabad.

How Will The Skywalks Help?

The implementation of skywalks offers multiple benefits. Pedestrians can avoid navigating busy roads, reducing the likelihood of accidents. Moreover, direct connections between metro stations and key locations make commuting more efficient. In addition to the convenience and safety, these modern skywalks contribute to a smarter and more organised cityscape.
