According to a statement from Lahaul and Spiti Police, the advisory — based on assessments from the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) and the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) — warns of potential medium-sized avalanches on steep slopes. Travellers have been strongly advised to stick to designated safe routes to minimise risks.

“The snow avalanche warning (Danger Level 3, Orange) will remain in effect for Lahaul and Spiti until 5:00 PM on February 28, 2025,” the advisory reads. It highlights vulnerable areas prone to avalanches and urges people to limit movement to secure paths.

Adding to the concerns, the Gurez sector has seen a staggering four to five feet of fresh snow, while the Tulail region has recorded approximately six inches, reported Financial Express.

Recent Avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir Raises Fresh Concerns

This warning comes on the heels of a recent avalanche in Khandyal village, located in Gurez Valley, Jammu and Kashmir. The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, damaged a house but, fortunately, caused no injuries or casualties, the FE report stated. Revenue officials have been dispatched to assess the extent of the damage, and authorities have advised residents to stay alert as snowfall continues.

Gurez Valley has been blanketed with four to five feet of fresh snow, while Tulail has seen a lighter but still significant six-inch accumulation. Meanwhile, other regions of Jammu and Kashmir, including the Udhampur district, are experiencing relentless rain and snowfall. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), these conditions are expected to persist until February 28.

With the extreme weather showing no signs of letting up, officials are urging everyone in affected regions to remain cautious, stay updated on advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel in hazardous areas.
