4 Medical Interns Suspended In Gujarat For 'Assaulting Batchmates Over Jokes', FIRs Filed

The FIR says that both incidents took place on Friday and that the interns were detained, assaulted and issued death threats by the accused.

Two interns of the Government Medical College in Gujarat's Bhavnagar have alleged that they were detained and assaulted by some of their batchmates and a senior over jokes shared by them on Instagram. The police have said that two FIRs have been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for wrongful confinement, intentionally causing hurt, intentionally insulting someone to provoke a breach of peace, and using obscene acts and language in a public place.

The college is treating the incident as a case of ragging, and the four students accused of the assault have been suspended. The police also said that the two interns and one of their friends had been hospitalised due to the assaults.

The two interns, Ishan Kotak and Aman Joshi, have also said in separate complaints that the accused were also unhappy about the way they had managed the convocation and sports activities in the medical college.

According to Joshi, four of his batchmates and a senior came to his hostel room late at night, and they took him to another room where they slapped him several times, abused him, and threatened to kill him. Kotak said that he was asked to come out of his hostel room and meet four batchmates near the hostel. When he reached there, he and his friend accompanying him were pushed into a vehicle, taken around and assaulted.

“Two days ago, Dr Milan, Dr Piyush, Dr Man, and Dr Naren called the three juniors to a location, forcibly made them sit in a car, verbally abused them while driving around the city, and physically assaulted them. They were also threatened, prompting them to approach the police,” the police complaint said, according to India Today.

While Joshi has said that the accused were unhappy about the decisions he took for the sports activities in the college, Kotak said that they were angry about the jokes he shared on Instagram.
