Gujarat IAS Officer's Wife Who 'Eloped' with Gangster Returns Home, Dies By Suicide

A Gujarat IAS officer's wife died after allegedly consuming poison outside her husband's residence. She was an accused in two cases in Tamil Nadu involving kidnapping and loan recovery.

Gandhinagar News: A Gujarat cadre IAS officer’s wife allegedly eloped with a gangster nine months ago. She came back on Saturday morning and purportedly consumed poison in a garden across the road from the official residence of her husband-- Ranjeeth Kumar J--after he instructed aides not to let her into his home in Sector-19 of Gandhinagar.

The victim, identified as Surya J, 45, passed away at Civil Hospital in the Gujarat capital on Sunday.

"Kumar had gone out to finalise his divorce petition with Surya on Saturday. Rattled at not being let in, she (Surya) ingested poison and called up 108 (an ambulance helpline)," Times of India quoted a police officer as saying.

Surya was reportedly an "accused” in two cases in Tamil Nadu along with her rumoured boyfriend and local gangster known as "High Court Maharaja", and his aide Senthil Kumar. The trio allegedly abducted the boy on July 11 over a monetary dispute with his mother and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore, before Madurai cops managed to rescue him, according to TOI report.

Quoting sources, the report said that Surya might have gone to the house of her husband Ranjeeth-- currently posted as the Secretary of Gujarat Electricity Regulation Commission (GERC)-- to evade arrest by Tamil Nadu Police in the kidnapping case of the 14-year-old boy.

The cops have reportedly found a purported suicide note in Tamil from Surya's but belonging. The note addressed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, describes her “ordeal and anguish” on being “falsely accused” in two cases, The Indian Express reported quoting an official of the Gandhinagar district police.

As per the report, in her note, Surya sought to proclaim her innocence in the two cases. She reportedly wrote that someone identified as ‘Raja’ lured her into a trap and that she got entangled in two criminal cases in which he is the prime accused. While one case pertains to loan recovery from a woman to whom Raja had allegedly given money, the other one is of kidnapping a boy.

As per The Indian Express report, Surya, in her note said, her husband is a noble man, who took care of their children in her absence.

Meanwhile, police have filed an Accidental Death report in the case and are ascertaining if Surya had arrived with the poison in preparation to take the drastic step.
