Woman's Body Found Buried Under Concrete Section In Faridabad, Family Alleges Dowry Abuse

The family alleges dowry abuse and claims Tanu was mistreated. Neighbors reported a suspicious pit dug before her disappearance, raising further concerns.

The decomposed body of a 24-year-old woman was discovered buried beneath a newly paved stretch of road in a residential lane in Haryana's Faridabad on Friday.

The remains were found in a 10-foot deep pit and the body was exhumed using an excavator and later identified as Tanu, a native of Shikohabad in Uttar Pradesh, reported NDTV.

She had been married for less than two years to Arun, a resident of Roshan Nagar in Faridabad.

Four members of the husband's family including him, his parents and another close relative have been detained by the police in connection with the matter.

Tanu's body was discovered just outside the home where she lived with her husband and in-laws. Neighbours told police that the area had been dug up two months ago for a drainage project. Suspicion grew after a concrete slab was hastily laid over the pit, and Tanu had not been seen in the area since April.

The body has been sent for a forensic examination to determine the precise cause and timing of death.

Family Alleges Dowry Abuse

Preeti, Tanu's sister, has claimed that Tanu faced constant mental and physical abuse after her marriage in 2023. According to her, the abuse began shortly after the wedding, with repeated demands from Arun and his parents for gold jewellery and cash.

“Just a few months after the wedding, Tanu came back to live with us. She wasn’t being treated well,” Preeti said. “She stayed with our family for more than a year. When we eventually sent her back, the same abuse resumed. They didn’t even let her talk to us on the phone.”

The family’s concern intensified on April 9 when Preeti was unable to reach her sister by phone. Then, on April 23, Tanu’s in-laws claimed she had run away from home — a statement that raised more questions than answers.

Preeti has alleged that despite the family's efforts to report the matter, no concrete action was taken for weeks. "We kept pleading, but the case didn’t move. No one took us seriously until it was too late,” she said.

Neighbours Raise Suspicion

Residents have since revealed details that add to the gravity of the case. Several people in the neighbourhood recalled that Tanu’s father-in-law dug the pit in April, citing the lack of a proper drainage system. Soon after, the pit was covered with cement.

“Everyone saw the pit being dug. He said it was for dirty water. But after that, the daughter-in-law vanished. Some of us felt something wasn’t right, but we never imagined this,” said one neighbour.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Usha Kundu said that a formal complaint was received a week ago.

"As soon as we received the complaint, we initiated swift action. The body was recovered and four suspects were taken into custody. Interrogation is ongoing, and the investigation is being conducted thoroughly,” she said.
