Delhi Rains: IGI Airport Terminal 1 Flooded, Traffic Snarls Across NCR Due To Heavy Waterlogging—WATCH

The IGI Airport witnessed waterlogging at the Terminal 1 after heavy rain lashed the national capital on Tuesday. At least 12 flights were diverted today due to the weather.

The national capital was lashed by intense pre-monsoon showers on Tuesday, offering much-needed respite from the scorching heat but also plunging several parts of the city into waterlogged chaos and traffic snarls.

Heavy rainfall between 3 pm and 4 pm caused major disruptions, with at least 12 flights diverted from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport due to turbulent weather conditions, an airport official confirmed, as reported by news agency PTI.

A video of the inside visuals of IGI Airport showed waterlogging at the Terminal 1 after heavy rain lashed the national capital.

Several low-lying and underpass areas, including Delhi Cantonment, Zakhira, Pul Prahladpur, ITO, Najafgarh Road, and Rohtak Road, witnessed severe waterlogging, leaving vehicles stranded and traffic movement heavily impacted. In many of these locations, water rose to knee-deep levels, stalling daily commutes.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier sounded a red alert for Delhi and adjoining regions, warning of thunderstorms with hail, moderate to heavy rainfall, and gusty winds touching 50–70 km/h at isolated locations.

According to IMD data,  various parts of the city recorded different amounts of rainfall. While Safdarjung received 10 mm rainfall, Lodhi Road and Pusa received 5 mm and 41 mm, respectively. Narayana recorded 15 mm and Ayanagar received 23 mm rainfall.

Wind speeds ranging between 35 to 40 km/h were observed at both Palam and Safdarjung observatories between 2:30 pm and 3 pm, and again around 6:30 pm.

The weather had a cooling effect on the city’s temperature. Delhi’s maximum temperature dropped to 36.2 degrees Celsius, nearly 4 degrees below the seasonal average, while the minimum stayed at 28 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal. Relative humidity stood at 61 percent in the evening.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds up to 60 km/h, particularly during the night. Light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue, with temperatures likely to hover around 34 degrees Celsius (max) and 27 degrees Celsius (min).

The weather department also issued warning, advising residents to stay indoors, unplug electrical devices during storms, and avoid taking shelter under trees or metal structures. The warning emphasised that intense lightning could pose serious risks to individuals in open areas, including outdoor workers, livestock, and farmers. Disruptions to traffic and delays in flight and train services are also likely.

People were warned against using mobile phones in open areas during lightning activity. Farmers and outdoor workers were urged to stop working and seek safe shelter immediately.

IMD has asked people to follow updates through official platforms and credible media outlets. The yellow alert remains in effect through Thursday, indicating continuing unsettled weather with rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected.

Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi was relatively better on Tuesday, falling under the ‘moderate’ category with an AQI of 104 at 4 pm, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
