Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma Vows Action Against 'Thick-Skinned' Officers, Warns: 'If There Is Any Negligence...'

Parvesh Verma said the Delhi officers had become "thick-skinned" in the last ten years as he vowed action against those being negligent in their attitude.

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma on Friday stressed that the newly-elected BJP government in the city "will leave no stone unturned" to bring a change in the existing system and resolve all the issues as he issued a stern warning to the Delhi officers exercising negligence. The minister's remarks came after he ordered the suspension of an executive engineer over poor desilting of a drain in the Akshardham area.

He said that the officers had become "thick-skinned" in the last ten years and added that those who had not been working will be made to sweat in the field to burn their fat and work hard just like the Delhi cabinet has been working on the ground for 20 hours. "If there is any negligence there, we will take strict action against the officer concerned," he said.

"There are several issues. We, too, have decided that we will not shy away from working hard. We will make these officers make. The officers who had not worked for the last 10 years, the entire system of Delhi had broken down and it was almost on the brink of collapse - we will make all such officers work," he said.

"Our government is out on the ground, we have given strict directions to the officers, negligence will not be tolerated at all. The existing system will have to be changed and we will resolve all issues. We will leave no stone unturned...In the last 10 years, officers have become thick-skinned; we will get rid of this. We are making all of them work on the ground. I, too, am working on the ground," Verma said.

Delhi Govt In Talks With Haryana, UP Over Drainage System

The PWD minister further spoke about the insufficient drainage capacity of the national capital and that the government is taking necesssary steps to improve it. He also informed that the Delhi government is in talks with the CMs of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana regarding the issue of water from these states being drained into the Yamuna.

"We inspected drainages. We have a lower capacity of treatment of the drainages in Delhi, we are enhancing the capacity. I have also spoken with the CMs of adjoining states like UP and Haryana in connection with the drainages from there," he said.

"All that water is drained in Yamuna and our efforts are to see that 100% of that water is treated. All STPs (Sewage Treatment Plants) will be checked whether they are functioning on their capacity, whether their quality is good. I am personally visiting each STP and if there is any negligence there, we will take strict action against the officer concerned," he said.

Reacting to Parvesh Verma's remarks on Delhi officers, AAP leader Sandeep Pathak said that the BJP government was "making excuses" and instead questioned why the promised gas cylinders were not given.
