'Carbon Monoxide Inside...Don't Switch On Lights': Mumbai Man Suffering Chronic Disease Suffocates To Death

A 27-year-old man in Mumbai ended his life by inhaling carbon monoxide due to incurable medical conditions and job loss.

A man, bogged down by health issues, died by suicide in the suburbs of Mumbai by inhaling Carbon Monoxide gas. The 27-year-old wrote in his suicide note that he was suffering from small fibre neuropathy and autonomic neuropathy, both of which cannot be cured.

The incident came to light when the man's sister in Bengaluru had not been able to contact him since Saturday. The sisted dropped an e-mail to the Mumbai police after the Crime Branch traced his mobile location to the Kaman area in Vasai, reported NDTV.

On reaching the rented flat where the man was staying, the Naigaon police found a note on the door that read "Carbon monoxide inside, don't switch on the lights." On the bedroom door was another warning that read: "Carbon monoxide inside. Please don’t switch on the lights. Call the police.”

Inside, the police found a man wearing an inhalation mask connected to a carbon monoxide cylinder. The windowa of the room were sealed shut with the help of a carpenter to prevent gas leakage. To protect themselves from the deadly gas, the fire brigade personnel wore PPE kits and breathing apparatus sets and broke into the bedroom aided with a hydraulic spreader cutter, reported Hindustan Times.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless and odourless poisonous gas which is used in the chemical and metal industry.

'Medical Conditions Made Me Miserable'

The police found a suicide note in which he said that he was suffering from medical conditions that had no cure which made his life miserable.

"Both the medical conditions have no cure and have rapidly progressed in the span of last 1.5 years. I have consulted dozens of doctors but no one was able to help. These medical conditions have made me so miserable," read the suicide note.

"I am on the verge of losing my job. The conditions won't ever allow me again to work and earn and live a good life," he added.

A case of accidental death has been booked by the police and they are investigating the source of gas cylinders.

He arranged the cylinders methodically by tying two of them to both his hands and put on a helmet. A tube was connected to the gas cylinder from one end and  held in his mouth through a nebulizer from the other. Through it, the poisonous noxious gas was drawn into his body.

The fire brigade personnel carefully cut the tube in his mouth with a knife and separated it from the cylinder.

An investigating officer said that the man took precautions to ensure that no one was harmed. "He had written clear instructions on how to enter the bedroom, and had shut the windows with wooden planks.”

The body has been sent for autopsy.
