As Kejriwal Claims Delhi Had No Power Cuts Under AAP Govt, BJP Counters Claim With Data

Delhi’s Power Minister refuted Kejriwal’s statement, presenting data from 2024 and 2025 that showed Delhi experienced a total of 21,597 power cuts lasting over an hour in AAP’s final year in power.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal claimed on Friday that Delhi faced no power cut during the AAP government’s tenure over the last 10 years, but the BJP countered his statement with data challenging the claim.

In a post on X, Kejriwal asserted that his government had eliminated power cuts in the capital, but since the BJP took charge, outages had returned. He also amplified complaints from residents about blackouts by retweeting multiple posts.

However, Kejriwal did not provide any supporting data amid his claims. And, Delhi’s Power Minister Ashish Sood refuted Kejriwal’s statement, presenting data from 2024 and 2025 that showed Delhi experienced a total of 21,597 power cuts lasting over an hour in AAP’s final year in power.

The minister also outlined the data showing the daily average, stating that multiple areas of the city experienced at least 60 power cuts of over an hour each day. He also hits out at Kejriwal for commenting on the issues of Delhi from Punjab.

Power Supply: A Long-Standing Political Issue

Power supply has been a long-standing political issue in Delhi. Kejriwal initially rose to prominence by attacking the Congress-led Sheila Dikshit government over electricity concerns, accusing power companies of overcharging consumers. While his administration introduced subsidies for households using up to 400 units, power companies continued receiving full payments.

Meanwhile, the Rekha Gupta-led BJP government has assured that the power subsidy scheme will continue. She further announced a Rs 100 crore allocation for a pilot project aimed at shifting overhead electricity cables in the 2025-26 budget while stressing the need to make the national capital self-sufficient in energy.

In her first budget presentation in the Delhi Assembly, Gupta, who also serves as the finance minister, earmarked Rs 3,847 crore for the city’s power department. In comparison, the previous AAP government had allocated Rs 3,353 crore for the department in the 2024-25 budget, according to a report by Economics Times.
