Delhi Airport's New Terminal 1 Opens Today; IndiGo, SpiceJet To Shift Operations — See Pics

Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 reopens today, months after canopy collapse. The new terminal offers mobile check-in and other expanded amenities for passengers.

The newly developed Terminal 1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is set to become operational from Saturday, August 17. Flight operations at Terminal 1 had been suspended in June this year following a canopy collapse incident.

The terminal, a major component of Delhi International Airport Limited's Phase 3A expansion project, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10.

According to the airport operator, with Terminal 1 functional again, the flight operations of IndiGo and SpiceJet will shift there. “As per the plan, SpiceJet would shift their 13 flights to Terminal 1 from August 17 and subsequently IndiGo would move back their 34 flights from T2 and T3 to T1, from September 2,” the DIAL said in its release.

As per the release, with the opening of Terminal 1, all passengers flying with SpiceJet will enter through Entry Gate A on the ground floor, while IndiGo passengers will enter through Entry Gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. Meanwhile, all passenger arrivals will take place through dedicated arrival areas on the ground floor.

For flyers' convenience, DIAL has introduced a Mobile Check-in Service, which allows passengers to bypass long queues at check-in counters. It has also installed signage at strategic locations, including on-road markings, to guide IndiGo and SpiceJet passengers to the departures area. Passengers can also enjoy an expanded shopping and dine-in area, a prayer room, a yoga zone, and quiet spaces, among other amenities.

Other innovative facilities include an Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), Individual Carrier System (ICS), and Self Baggage Drop (SBD) kiosks. Additionally, RAXA guards will be deployed to assist passengers and direct them to the appropriate departure points.

In terms of connectivity, T1 is well-linked with Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line. It also offers regular bus services operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), and a shuttle service connecting terminals 1, 2, and 3, for easy transit.
