Chennai To Face Power Cut On July 25, 2025: Over 40 Areas To Be Affected — Details

Chennai is set to face a planned power outage, July 25, 2025, from 9 AM to 2 PM in areas including Sithalapakkam, Perumbakkam and Alamathy.

Several parts of Chennai are expected to face a scheduled power outage on Thursday (July 24, 2025), as announced by TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation). The interruption, which is part of routine maintenance and MRT testing, will take place between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM, affecting key neighborhoods across the city.

TANGEDCO stated that the outage is necessary to carry out feeder upgrades, structural repairs, and MRT testing at various substations. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to make necessary arrangements to minimize inconvenience during the downtime.

TANGEDCO officials have assured that power supply will be restored promptly once the maintenance operations are complete. Consumers can reach out to local electricity offices for any assistance during the outage.

Why Chennai Faces Planned Power Cut?

According to officials, the planned interruptions are essential for upgrading critical components of the distribution network, including transformers, feeders, and substations. This periodic overhaul is designed to improve service reliability and prevent unexpected breakdowns, especially during peak load periods.

Another key reason is the increasing strain on the grid during the summer months, when electricity consumption surges due to widespread air conditioner use. Scheduled maintenance helps manage this demand and reduces the likelihood of system overloads. In some cases, power cuts are also necessary to repair damage to underground cables—often caused by unrelated civic works like road digging or pipeline installation.
