Leftover Food From Bonalu Celebrations
The incident unfolded after the family reheated and ate leftover boti (Goat intestine) and chicken that had been prepared for Bonalu celebrations on Sunday. The food, which had been stored in the refrigerator for over a day, was consumed again on July 21. Shortly after the meal, all family members began experiencing symptoms of severe diarrhoea and foodborne illness, prompting immediate medical attention.
Initially, the affected individuals sought treatment at the RTC Hospital in Tarnaka. However, as their condition failed to improve, they were shifted to a private hospital in Chintalkunta on Tuesday. However, Srinivas Yadav was declared brought dead upon arrival by the doctors.
Among those affected are his wife, daughters, mother, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and their children. According to the hospital, his wife and daughters are in critical condition and are currently receiving intensive medical care.
Police Begin Probe
The sudden deterioration in the family's health has sent shockwaves across the locality, with many residents expressing concern over the safety of consuming refrigerated leftovers, especially during monsoon season when the risk of food spoilage is higher.
The Vanasthalipuram police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (suspicious death) and have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Police officials said they are examining whether any form of negligence or external contamination played a role in the incident.
Authorities have also sent food samples from the residence for forensic analysis, and the results are awaited.
