Bengaluru Rapido Row: CCTV Shows Woman Hitting Driver Before Alleged Assault That Led To His Arrest

A Rapido driver was arrested for assaulting a woman passenger during their argument in Bengaluru. However, a new CCTV video shows her hitting him multiple times.

Hours after a viral video of a Rapido bike taxi driver slapping a woman passenger in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar sparked public outrage, a fresh CCTV footage has come to the fore presenting a different sequence of events. The new video shows the woman, who was slapped by the driver, hitting the driver during their altercation.

In the widely circulated video, which surfaced earlier, the driver, who has now been arrested for assaulting the woman, could be seen hitting the woman hard enough to knock her down on the road, while bystanders watched.

However, the new CCTV footage, which seems to have captured the moments leading up to the confrontation, shows the woman hitting the driver first, that too, multiple times.

Driver Shares His Side of the Story

After his arrest, the driver shared a detailed account of the altercation. He claimed the woman booked the ride at 9:00 AM and began speaking “rashly” from the outset. He said he opted to take a shortcut through Jayanagar to save time, when he encountered a traffic obstruction about 100 meters from her destination, which led to a confrontation between the two, India Today reported.

“She asked me what I’ve studied and if I know how to drive,” he said, describing the exchange as demeaning and saying the ride was tense from the beginning itself. According to him, her tone escalated, prompting him to lose his temper and retort, “go back to your country.”

“I told her that I got her here because it’s a shortcut. She didn’t let me speak; she spoke very rashly,” he added.

He further alleged the situation intensified when the woman refused to listen, struck him with her tiffin box, and raised her hand a second time, the report said. “I waited as much as I could and kept my patience. I know that we shouldn’t hit women,” he said. “But then she hit me again... I hit her once.”

The driver also said that his limited English proficiency added to the miscommunication. “I know little English. I told her to go back to her state,” he said, admitting frustration in expressing himself during the exchange.

The driver said the woman finally made the payment after the altercation and that he headed to nearby store to report her. “I was going to complain about her to the manager at the Kushal (jewellery) store, but the manager wasn’t there. I explained to whoever was there that she was angry for no reason and raised her hand at me first.”

The altercation reportedly began after the woman stopped the driver misway, accusing him of rash driving. After ending the trip early, she refused to return the helmet or pay the Rs 77 fare.
