Baba Siddique Profile: From Congress To NCP And Stints As Maharashtra Minister — All About Him

NCP leader Baba Siddique was actively involved in various student movements and joined the Indian National Congress as a teenager in 1977.

Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique was shot and killed by unidentified attackers in Mumbai on Saturday. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. According to Mumbai Police, two individuals connected to the shooting have been arrested, as reported by news agency ANI.

The shooting occurred outside the office of his son, MLA Zeeshan Siddiqui, near Colgate Ground in Nirmal Nagar, a police official informed PTI. Following the incident, Maharashtra Home Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with senior police officials, arrived at Lilavati Hospital.

Baba Siddique, whose full name was Ziauddin Siddiqui, was previously affiliated with the Indian National Congress. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he switched allegiance to Ajit Pawar's NCP, dealing a significant blow to the Congress party. Siddique became an MLA for the Bandra West Assembly constituency in 1999 while with Congress and was re-elected in 2004 and 2009, serving three consecutive terms.

Throughout his political career, Siddique held several significant positions, including President of Bandra Taluka Youth Congress (1982), Minister of Food and Civil Supplies with the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (2014), and Minister of State for Labor and FDA (2004-2008). He also served as President and Senior Vice President of various political bodies.

Siddique was born to Abdul Rahim Siddiqui and Razia Siddiqui. He was married to Shahzeen Siddiqui, and they had two children: a daughter, Dr. Arshiya Siddiqui, and a son, Zeeshan Siddiqui, who is currently an MLA and President of the Mumbai Youth Congress.

Baba Siddique completed his schooling at St. Ann's High School in Mumbai and pursued further education at M.M.K. College. He became actively involved in various student movements, joining the Indian National Congress as a teenager in 1977. By 1980, he had become the general secretary of the Bandra Taluka Youth Congress, later being elected as its president for two consecutive terms.

In 1988, he was appointed president of the Mumbai Youth Congress and was elected as a municipal councillor in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in 1992. Siddique was elected as the MLA for Bandra West in 1999 and served as the chairman of the MHADA Mumbai Board, appointed by the Maharashtra government from 2000 to 2004. Additionally, he held the position of Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, Labour, FDA, and Consumer Protection in the Maharashtra government.
