Earlier on Sunday, the AIMPLB announced a nationwide protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. As part of the first phase, large sit-ins were planned outside the state assemblies in Patna on March 26 and Vijayawada on March 29.
Protests against the Waqf Bill were staged in Bihar on Wednesday as political parties within the state and outside in support with the AIMPLB, which organised a 'maha dharna' in Patna.
The AIMPLB demonstrations took place less than a kilometre from the Vidhan Sabha, to demand the withdrawal of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill introduced by the Narendra Modi-led government. The protests also urged "secular" leaders, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, to reconsider their "support" for the contentious legislation.
The AIMPLB's appeal comes after Parliament's joint committee submitted its report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The Bill is expected to be introduced before the Parliament after Eid.
The 655-page report was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on 30 January. The joint committee adopted the report, including amendments suggested by ruling BJP members by a 15-11 majority vote. The opposition criticised the move, calling it an attempt to dismantle Waqf boards.
The Bill was referred to the joint committee on August 8 last year following its introduction in the Lok Sabha by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
