30 Stranded Mid-Air After Joyride Malfunctions At Chennai Amusement Park, Rescue Op Begins After Over 3 Hours

A joyride malfunction at a Chennai amusement park left 30 people, including children, stranded 50 feet in the air for over three hours. The 'Topgun' ride halted around 6 PM, prompting a delayed rescue operation.

In a harrowing incident in Tamil Nadu, a joyride at a private amusement park on Chennai’s East Coast Road malfunctioned on Tuesday, leaving 30 individuals — including women and children — stranded over 50 feet in the air for more than three hours.

According to India Today, the incident occurred around 6 pm when the ride, named ‘Topgun’, came to a sudden halt mid-air following a loud noise from its right engine. The stranded riders remained suspended in their seats, unable to descend, as rescue efforts were delayed. A rescue operation commenced only around 9:30 pm, nearly three-and-a-half hours after the ride stopped.

Crane To Be Used To Bring Down Trapped Individuals

Times Now reported that the mishap left many visitors at the amusement park shocked. Fire and Rescue Services officials were alerted immediately and arrived at the site to launch rescue efforts. Authorities planned to bring down the trapped individuals one by one using a giant crane.

As the rescue operation continue late into the evening, emergency personnel provided water and biscuits to those stuck on the ride, according to India Today.

Officials have assured that all necessary measures are being taken to safely bring down those stranded. Further details are awaited.

In March, a metal rod from a giant swing ride collapsed at MGM Amusement Park in Chennai, injuring two college students. Fifty college students went to the amusement park for a fun outing when the event happened. Two people were hit by a metal rod that suddenly fell as they were riding a huge swing.  After suffering severe head injuries, one of the victims—a female student—was taken right away to the hospital for emergency treatment, Times Now reported. Three people connected to the park's administration and operations were taken into custody by the Kanathur police after the incident, and they filed a formal complaint.
