Fire at Vishal Mega Mart in Delhi’s Karol Bagh rages on after 12 hours; one person dead, cause unknown. Firefighters continue operations amid chaos in the crowded market area.

A massive fire tore through the Vishal Mega Mart in Delhi’s bustling Karol Bagh area on Friday evening, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and sparking chaos across the crowded neighborhood. Despite over 12 hours of intense firefighting efforts, the blaze remains only partially contained. Tragically, one person has been confirmed dead, according to the Delhi Fire Department.
Emergency services were quick to respond, with at least 15 fire tenders rushed to the scene to tackle the flames. Firefighters have been working tirelessly through the night in a race against time to control the inferno that has engulfed the multi-storey building.
The structure — which includes a basement, ground floor, and three additional floors — reportedly caught fire on the second floor. From there, the flames rapidly spread to other sections of the building, turning the popular retail outlet into a danger zone. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

At the time of the incident, several people were inside the store. Fortunately, swift evacuation efforts helped clear the building before the fire could spread further and trap more individuals. Still, the loss of one young man has cast a dark shadow over the rescue operation.
A 25-year-old man, Kumar Dhirender Pratap, was found dead in a lift after a fire broke out at a Vishal Mega Mart in Karol Bagh, central Delhi, on Saturday. The fire, reported around 6:44 PM on the second floor of the four-storey building on Padam Singh Road, was confined mainly to that level. Police, fire, and disaster teams discovered the body during a rescue operation. Thirteen fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
As the fire raged on, panic gripped the surrounding area. Karol Bagh, known for its tightly packed shops and heavy foot traffic, quickly descended into chaos. Delhi Police moved in to manage the situation, securing the perimeter and helping to prevent further injuries as firefighting teams continued their work.
The scene remains tense as firefighters battle stubborn hotspots within the structure. Authorities have yet to announce when the fire will be fully extinguished, leaving the neighborhood on edge.
This incident comes just a day after a fire broke out at the Trauma Center of AIIMS in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon. That blaze, triggered by an electrical transformer, was fortunately brought under control without any casualties.
