Now, tourists visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris can effortlessly make travel bookings through India's UPI. The National Payments Corporation of India's international subsidiary, NPCI International Payments (NIPL), has partnered with the French e-commerce and payments platform Lyra to enable the acceptance of UPI payments in France, starting with Paris’s Eiffel Tower.
At an event hosted by the Indian Embassy in France to commemorate India's Republic Day, the NPCI announced that Indian tourists visiting the Eiffel Tower can now efficiently acquire tickets online using the UPI payment system. This initiative is designed to simplify the transaction process, ensuring it is fast, convenient, and seamless.
It is noteworthy that during the 75th Republic Day celebrations, French President Emmanuel Macron was the Chief Guest, and he was warmly welcomed by PM Narendra Modi in Jaipur. The leaders engaged in discussions over a cup of tea where PM Modi's use of UPI for the payment surprised and impressed the French President.
The PM also shared a post regarding the same on his Instagram. In the caption, he wrote, “Tea with my friend President @emmanuelmacron.” In the shared video, PM Modi can be seen explaining to President Macron about the benefits of drinking kulhad chai. He was quoted saying, “This is the most environment-friendly tea and gives you a special taste of Earth also.”
