Tesla Secures First Permit For Robotaxi Service In California

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) granted Tesla a transportation charter-party carrier (TCP) permit, which is typically issued for chauffeur-driven services.

Tesla secured its initial permit in California on Tuesday, marking the first step in a series of regulatory approvals needed to introduce its promised robotaxi service in the state.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) granted Tesla a transportation charter-party carrier (TCP) permit, which is typically issued for chauffeur-driven services, reported Reuters. This permit allows the company to own and manage a fleet of vehicles and transport employees on pre-arranged trips, according to the state regulator.

More Permits Required for Full Rollout

However, the CPUC clarified that this permit alone did not authorise Tesla to provide autonomous rides or operate a ride-hailing service for the public. A spokesperson from the commission emphasised that additional approvals would be required before Tesla could officially launch its driverless taxi service.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk shifted his focus to robotaxis last year after the company's sales growth slowed. He promised that fully autonomous ride-hailing services would be introduced in California and Texas in 2025. In October, the company unveiled the Cybercab, a concept for a driverless taxi without a steering wheel or control pedals.

The CPUC revealed that Tesla submitted its TCP permit application in November 2024, however it was yet to apply for other necessary approvals. To launch a commercial robotaxi service, the company would also need permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the CPUC.

As of Tuesday, Tesla only held a DMV permit allowing it to test autonomous vehicles with a safety driver. A DMV spokesperson confirmed that Tesla has not yet applied for the additional permits required to proceed with a fully autonomous ride-hailing service.

No comments have been made by the company yet regarding the permit and other details on the application.
