Tata To Double iPhone Casing Output At Hosur Plant Amid Apple’s India Push: Report

Tata Electronics is preparing to significantly boost its production of iPhone enclosures at its Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu, according to a report by The Economic Times. The company is now targeting a doubling of its current capacity, which stands at approximately 50,000 units.

Citing a source familiar with the development, the report stated, “Tata Electronics is looking to double its existing capacity of around 50,000 enclosures.” The planned ramp-up will coincide with Apple’s annual product release cycle, typically scheduled for September, and forms part of the facility’s second phase of expansion.

Returning to Pre-Fire Momentum

Following the fire, operations at the plant were disrupted, but efforts have since been made to resume normalcy. “It took some time for them to get back on track after the fire,” another person familiar with the matter said. “But the capacity is at pre-fire levels now," the report added.

The expansion comes at a time when Apple is increasingly leaning on India as a strategic manufacturing base. During Apple’s Q1 earnings call held on May 1, CEO Tim Cook emphasised the growing significance of India in Apple’s global production strategy.

“For the June quarter, we do expect the majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin,” Cook stated. He also pointed out that while India will play a central role in iPhone production, Vietnam will continue to lead production for iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and AirPods. The remarks further reflect Apple’s broader effort to reduce dependence on Chinese manufacturing amid evolving geopolitical tensions and trade challenges.

Tata Strengthens its Position in Apple’s Ecosystem

Tata Electronics’ ambitions to play a larger role in Apple’s global supply chain have become increasingly evident over the past year. In March 2024, the conglomerate completed the acquisition of Wistron’s India operations located in Narsapura, Karnataka. This move was followed in early 2025 by Tata acquiring a controlling 60 per cent stake in Pegatron Technology India (PTI).

These strategic acquisitions position Tata as a growing force within Apple’s network of suppliers, particularly as the US tech giant accelerates its shift toward India-based manufacturing partners.

Tata’s efforts mirror a broader trend among Apple’s key suppliers. Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturing partner, is also expanding its footprint in India. The company is constructing a major new production facility in Bengaluru and has recently opened another site in Hyderabad dedicated to assembling AirPods. This signals Foxconn’s diversification in India beyond just smartphone assembly.

Collectively, these developments reflect Apple’s concerted move to fortify and diversify its supply chain by anchoring a larger share of its hardware production in India.
