Share market today: On the 30-share Sensex platform, Adani Ports (3.23 per cent), UltraCemco, Sun Pharma, NTPC, M&M, Tata Motors were among the losers
Share Market Today: The two key equity benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, on Tuesday ended their two-day winning run, closing the session in the negative zone. The BSE Sensex dropped 106 points to settle at 80,004. On the other hand, the NSE Nifty50 settled at 24,195, declining 27 points.
Stock update
On the 30-share Sensex platform, Adani Ports (3.23 per cent), UltraCemco, Sun Pharma, NTPC, M&M, Tata Motors were among the losers. On the flip side, Asian Paints, Infosys, JSW Steel, TCS, Reliance, Tata Steel emerged gainers. All Adani Group stocks ended lower, with Adani Green Energy tumbling 7.05 per cent.
In the broader markets, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices settled in the green.
Sectoral update
On the sectoral front, auto, power, pharma, oil & gas dropped 1-1.5 per cent, while FMCG, IT, metal rose 0.5-1 per cent.
In the previous session on Monday, the BSE Sensex gained 993 points to close at 80,109, while the NSE Nifty50 jumped 315 points to 24,222.
Global update
In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo and Shanghai settled lower, while Hong Kong ended higher. European markets were trading lower. The US markets ended in the positive territory on Monday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.71 per cent to $73.58 a barrel.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned buyers on Monday after unabated selling for the past many days. They bought equities worth Rs 9,947.55 crore, according to exchange data.
Rupee falls 3 paise
Rupee fell 3 paise to close at 84.32 (provisional) against US dollar on Tuesday, as the greenback strengthened on Donald Trump's tariff plans and a muted trend in domestic equities. Forex traders said US President elect Donald Trump's comments that he would impose additional 10 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods and impose a 25 per cent levy on imports from Mexico and Canada has affected risk sentiment.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.27 and touched an intra-day high of 84.22 and low of 84.35 against the greenback. The unit ended the session at 84.32 (provisional) against the dollar, registering a fall of 3 paise over its previous close. On Monday, the rupee appreciated 12 paise to close at 84.29 against US dollar.
