Microsoft layoffs: The Tech Firm Fires More Employees In A Fresh Round Of Job Cuts
Microsoft layoffs: Social media posts on LinkedIn suggest that the layoffs primarily targeted roles in product and program management functions
Microsoft layoffs: Microsoft, the tech giant, is conducting another round of layoffs this week. According to a report from Wired Geek, the job cuts will affect multiple teams and locations across the globe within the company. However, Microsoft has not disclosed the exact number of employees affected by these layoffs.
Social media posts on the professional networking platform LinkedIn suggest that the layoffs primarily targeted roles in product and program management functions.
A spokesperson from Microsoft confirmed the layoffs to the publication. “Organisational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritise and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
Throughout this year, the company has been actively engaged in restructuring. Similar efforts were also made in the previous year. The recent round of layoffs adds to previous reductions that occurred in 2024. Earlier in the year, Microsoft reduced its workforce by 2,000 employees within its gaming division.
Additionally, last month, the company implemented another round of job cuts affecting nearly 1,000 positions, including roles within the Azure cloud unit and the HoloLens mixed-reality team, as reported.
Microsoft concluded its fiscal year on June 30, and it's customary for the tech giant to undertake restructuring efforts during this period. This practice was also observed in 2023 by Microsoft.
This move of the tech giant aligns with the trend of layoffs in the tech industry. According to data from layoffs.fyi (a layoff tracking website), the total number of employees laid off across tech companies in 2024 has approached nearly 100,000 so far. In comparison, the tech industry laid off almost 260,000 employees last year.
Massive job cuts have had a profound impact on individuals, families, and communities worldwide. Beyond the stark statistics of unemployment figures, these layoffs represent abrupt disruptions to livelihoods and careers.
