Airfares To Prayagraj Fall Nearly 50 Per Cent, Airlines Increase Flight Operations

Several flight booking platforms showed a decline in the airfares on the Delhi-Prayagraj route, averaging at Rs 10,000, compared to the earlier rates of Rs 29,000.

The airfares to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 declined almost 50 per cent after the government intervened in the matter. Earlier, the flight prices were touching the sky, following which the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) called on airlines to control the fares.

As such, airlines have increased their flying frequency to Prayagraj, resulting in the airfares falling almost 50 per cent, reported The Economic Times. Official estimates project more than 450 million devotees to visit the religious gathering, including nearly 1.5 million international tourists.

The report noted that several flight booking platforms showed a decline in the airfares on the Delhi-Prayagraj route, averaging at Rs 10,000, compared to the earlier rates of Rs 29,000. The airlines have attributed this decrease to adding more flights on the route.

The civil aviation ministry reported that 81 new flights were launched on the route in January, taking the overall number of seats to Prayagraj to almost 80,000 per month. On Thursday, IndiGo announced that airfares for Prayagraj have stabilised. The carrier also increased its flights on the route, scheduling 900 flights for the Maha Kumbh mela period. Further, the airline is reallocating capacity from other routes to increase the flights to cater to the rising demand, the report noted.

Air India Express is also set to begin daily direct flights between Delhi and Varanasi from February 5. Further, it will also increase its daily flights from three to four on the Bengaluru-Varanasi route. The carrier will also add 30 more flights on its Hyderabad-Varanasi route in February and March.

Akasa Airlines has also enhanced its operations on the route and announced daily flights connecting Prayagraj to Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, via Delhi. Between January 28 to February 26, the airline will also fly special direct flights between Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Prayagraj.
