India Will Be Free Of Poverty In 5-10 Years, Says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Campaigning for the elections in Gujarat, the minister said about 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty in the last decade itself

He added that India is on the path to become part of the top three economies by 2027

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday that India will fully eradicate poverty in the next five to ten years. He added that in the last decade, about 25 crore people have been withdrawn from poverty.

Addressing a media conference in Ahmedabad, the minister said that India is on the path to become part of the top three economies by 2027. “Till 2014, India was at 11th position in the size of economy. Now India is at 5th position. No one can stop India from getting into top 3 economies by 2027,” Singh added.

Taking a dig at the opposition, Singh hailed the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We have a strong and credible leader in PM Modi. He has vision, mission and passion. INDIA alliance doesn't have a leader, policy, intent. Everyone including JL Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Manmohan Singh talked about eradicating poverty but they could not,” the defence minister noted. 

Applauding the efforts of the government led by PM Modi regarding poverty alleviation, Singh said, “The IMF itself said that today in India, poverty is at the lowest levels. We want to completely eradicate poverty from India within five to ten years.”

"But in the last 10 years, 25 crore people were withdrawn from poverty. But we are not satisfied. Within 5-10 years, we will completely eradicate poverty," he stressed. The Union Minister was present in Gujarat today to campaign for the Elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also addressing four rallies in Karnataka today as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tries to solidify its position in the southern state before the Lok Sabha Elections.
