Toyota Hilux Black Edition Review: Worth A Buy?

Available with the top-end diesel AT, the changes are aesthetic only but do have a big effect. There is no chrome and that is pleasing while the grille, mirrors and door handles get the all black look

The Hilux Black edition was shown at the Auto Expo a few months back and here we have finally driven it. Interestingly, the Hilux Black edition does not have any price premium but is available with a diesel automatic combo only. Available with the top-end diesel AT, the changes are aesthetic only but do have a big effect. There is no chrome and that is pleasing while the grille, mirrors and door handles get the all black look which otherwise is chrome on the standard version.

Even the 18 inch alloys have been given an all black look. Look closer and you will see more cladding in black plus the front skid plate is also, you guessed it, black. The interior has a similar no-nonsense look but already came in black and hence has no change.

There are no changes in the features which means dual zone climate control is there along with a rather of small 8 inch touchscreen, rear camera, front parking sensors, 7 airbags etc. It certainly misses out on some gizmos available on other cheaper SUVs but it is rugged offroad focussed offering and in that respect it is pretty well equipped.

To drive, the Hilux Black is fun but has a bouncier ride than the Fortuner while it is more capable offroad along with a sense of toughness. The appeal of the car lies in the road presence and go anywhere capability while the blackened look actually makes it look much better than the standard Hilux.

It is less practical as a daily driver due to its huge length along with the open bed at the back but once past that it is a hugely capable car being billed as a lifestyle vehicle. It's a car for a particular set of buyers and this Black Edition is easily the one to get.
