Despite a huge share of carmakers deciding not to take part this year, the Auto Expo 2023 did witness some interesting launches and unveils.
With the Auto Expo 2023 drawing to a close, the number of new cars being showcased this time was comparatively less than previous iterations of the show but the significance of these new cars was higher in terms of key Indian market unveils while also having global significance. Here are our top 5 cars of the 2023 Auto Expo.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny
Easily one of the most talked about cars, the Jimny finally made its debut at the Motor Show in a five-door form which is unique for our market for now. India is the first market for the Jimny 5-door and Auto Expo also had the commencement for its bookings. The Jimny in 5-door form has more space than the globally made 3-door version while coming with a 1.5l petrol engine with manual and automatic on offer along with a proper 4x4 system.
Hyundai Ioniq 5
One of the biggest new launches of the show, the Ioniq 5 is Hyundai showing its intent to enter the premium EV space while also being the first product to be based on the global E-GMP platform. Not only that as the Ioniq 5 is assembled in India, but the pricing is also a lot more competitive. The Ioniq 5 comes with a range of 631km while having a cabin made from sustainable materials plus a long wheelbase. It comes with V2L, ADAS features and unique design bits like a movable centre console.
Maruti Suzuki eVX
As far as new cars go, this is one of the significant new unveils since it is the first electric car by Maruti with the intent of developing a bespoke electric car from scratch rather than converting its current range of cars into an EV. Developed with Toyota, the eVX will have a range of more than 500km and will be a premium SUV in terms of its positioning while still being attractively priced due to its higher localisation. The styling is also different with a sleek look while it will have dual screens merged together as well.
Tata Sierra EV
Tata is aggressively expanding its EV line-up with numerous new cars in the pipeline. The most interesting is the Sierra.EV which brings back a famous nameplate in an EV avatar. Revealed this time in a closer-to-production spec avatar, the Sierra.EV would be a big luxury SUV with a spacious cabin along with a minimalist layout while the battery pack and the range on offer would be expected to be the highest amongst Tata's EVs. The Sierra looks typically SUV with its boxy cool silhouette while the slim Deals are joined by clean surface lines. Coming in 2025, the Sierra would be a premium SUV to watch out for.
Tata Harrier EV
Tata surprised everyone at the Auto Expo with the Harrier EV and this could be an interesting car since the segment that it is operating in, the Harrier EV could be a significant new launch. Based on a Land Rover platform, the Harrier EV has an all-wheel drive electric powertrain and gets some design tweaks to make it stand out from rivals. The Harrier EV will have a larger battery pack and will have ample range.
