Breaking: US-Iran Tensions Escalate Again as Both Sides Trade Strikes Despite Ceasefire Talks

Tensions between the United States and Iran have flared up once again despite recent peace talks and ceasefire negotiations held in Switzerland. Fresh military action has reignited concerns over stability in the Middle East after the US launched strikes on targets in southern Iran, prompting a retaliatory response from Iranian forces. According to Iranian media reports, the US carried out strikes in the Sirik region, targeting missile and drone facilities. The US military claimed the operation was conducted in response to an alleged Iranian drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump confirmed that four drones targeted the ship, stating that three were intercepted by US forces while one caused limited damage. Iran, however, accused the US of violating the ceasefire agreement and claimed Washington was using the Hormuz incident as a pretext to target Iranian naval assets. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that any further US military action would be met with an even stronger response. Iranian officials also declared that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would now be subject to routes designated by Iran, warning that ships deviating from those routes could not be guaranteed safe passage. The exchange of accusations has further strained relations between the two countries. Senior Iranian lawmaker Ibrahim Azizi alleged that the US attacks during ongoing negotiations proved Washington was not serious about diplomacy and had violated the ceasefire understanding. Meanwhile, President Trump reiterated his administration's hardline stance on Iran's nuclear ambitions, saying the United States would never allow Iran to become a nuclear-armed nation. Trump also defended the killing of former Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, describing it as one of the most significant actions of the past century and claiming that several senior Iranian leaders had privately welcomed Soleimani's death because they feared his influence.
