Breaking: Indian Army Mobilized for Rescue Operations as Northeast India Battles Deadly Floods

Sikkim and Manipur are grappling with severe flooding and landslides after heavy rains and cloudbursts in the region. In Sikkim's Mangan district, around 1,500 tourists are stranded as rescue operations continue amidst widespread destruction. Tragically, a landslide caused by the heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of a porter and two soldiers, with six more soldiers reported missing and four others injured. The Indian Army is actively engaged in rescue operations, but the situation remains critical with continuous rainfall warnings for the region. The floods have been exacerbated by the melting of glaciers, resulting in rising water levels in over 300 high-altitude glacial lakes, ten of which are considered highly dangerous. In 2023, similar glacial lake bursts led to over 50 deaths in the region, highlighting the growing threat posed by global warming and the rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers.Meanwhile, Manipur's capital, Imphal, has witnessed catastrophic flooding, with rivers overflowing into residential areas, hotels, and hospitals. Emergency rescue operations, including using bulldozers to evacuate patients, are underway. The city’s infrastructure is submerged, with ambulances and hospitals completely inundated. These events underscore the increasing vulnerability of Northeast India to extreme weather patterns and the urgent need for disaster preparedness in the region.
