Vice Presidential Election 2022: TRS To Support Opposition Candidate Margaret Alva
TRS parliamentary party leader K. Keshava Rao on Friday said that KCR has decided to support combined Opposition candidate Margaret Alva and so TRS MPs numbering 16 are advised to vote accordingly.
Hyderabad: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Friday announced its support for the Opposition candidate Margaret Alva in the Vice Presidential election 2022. The Vice Presidential poll will be held on Saturday.
In a statement, TRS parliamentary party leader K Keshava Rao said, "The President of TRS Party and Telangana Cheif Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has decided to support the combined opposition candidate Margaret Alva for the post of Vice-President of India. The TRS MPs numbering 16 are advised to vote accordingly."
In the presidential poll also, the TRS had sided with the opposition and supported Yashwant Sinha. Sinha was defeated by NDA's Droupadi Murmu.
Alva has been fielded by the Opposition against the ruling NDA's nominee Jagdeep Dhankhar. Margaret Alva, a law graduate, has served as the 17th Governor of Goa, 23rd Governor of Gujarat, 4th Governor of Uttarakhand and 20th Governor of Rajasthan. She has also served as Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MP.
First elected to Rajya Sabha in 1974, Alva was re-elected in 1980, 1986 and 1992. In the mid 80s, Alva served as Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.
The incumbent Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu's term ends on August 10.

On the other hand, the NDA has announced former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its Vice Presidential candidate.
Jagdeep Dhankhar is likely to sail through the Vice President elections, scheduled on August 6, as the numbers are heavily stacked in his favour.
Dhankhar, who has practiced in both Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court of India, has served as an MP and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990. He took over as the West Bengal Governor in July 2019, and has been in the news for his frequent tussle with Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
The Vice President of India, the second-highest constitutional post in the country, is elected by members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. Nominated members are also eligible to vote.
