Telangana: 10 College Students Suspended For Assault, 5 Detained

In his complaint to the police, the victim stated that around 15–20 individuals barged into his hostel room on November 1 and started beating him.

10 students of a college near Shankarpally in Telangana's Hyderabad, have been suspended while five were booked for allegedly assaulting an undergraduate student in his hostel room and forcing him to raise slogans of 'Jai Mata Di' and 'Allah Hu Akbar'.

Telangana police Saturday booked some students for allegedly ragging a student in a hostel room at IBS College. The students have also been booked for attempted murder. The case was registered after the victim approached the police, complaining of being harassed by 15-20 individuals in his hostel room on campus.

According to a report in The Times of India, police arrested five suspects on Saturday, while the college suspended 10 students involved in the incident.

The matter came to light when the video of the incident went viral on social media. In the video, some students can be seen thrashing the victim for allegedly making a derogatory remark against Prophet Mohammed. The boys can be heard forcing him to say ‘Allah Hu Akbar’ while some said, 'will fix his ideology, beat him to a coma'.

According to the Shankarpally police, the issue began with a disagreement between the 19-year-old victim, a BBA-LLB first-year student, and a female student from his batch. The girl and the victim were friends at first, but their friendship soured when both of them made disparaging remarks about each other's sexual preferences. A negative remark made by the victim was disrespectful to a certain faith, and the girl shared those remarks with a classmate, who then distributed it among others.

In his complaint to the police, the victim stated that around 15–20 individuals barged into his hostel room on November 1 and started beating him. He alleged that the individuals demanded to see his phone and chats. He also accused another student of the college of sharing the screenshot of his messages with these people. Naming the student, he said she should be blamed for his predicament as he sent her messages via private text on October 14.
