YouTube’s Neal Mohan Promises More Ways To Help Creators Make Money In First Letter Since Becoming CEO

YouTube will now provide more opportunities for creators outside of advertisements.

Neal Mohan, who became the CEO of YouTube last month, penned his first letter for users and creators since assuming office. Mohan succeeded Susan Wojcicki on February 16. Lauding the efforts by creators in driving traffic on the platform, Mohan promised to offer more ways for them to make money on YouTube, along with outlining the path ahead for the Google-owned streaming platform.

YouTube’s creative ecosystem supported over two million jobs in 2021 alone, in countries such as India, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, France, Australia, Turkey, the UK, and the US combined, said Mohan citing Oxford Economics research.

Mohan said that YouTube will provide more opportunities for creators outside of advertisements. To do so, YouTube will expand its subscription business, invest in shopping, and steadily improve “paid digital goods offerings.” He added that over six million users paid for memberships to their favourite channels in December 2022, marking a growth of over 20 percent from the year before.

“This year, I’m looking forward to meeting with even more creators in person and hearing how we can support them on YouTube. Creator feedback is a key part of how we develop products, like a feature that lets creators reach new audiences by adding language tracks to their videos,” Mohan said, adding that YouTube will expand language tracks by testing it in livestreams and Shorts as well.

Speaking on gaming-related content, Mohan added that YouTube saw over two trillion gaming-related views in 2022, adding that the platform will now extend gifted memberships to mobile as well. “Gaming streams bring lots of highlights and memorable reactions that viewers love to clip. We'll enable viewers to remix clips into Shorts and add features that make it easy to recompose the best of gaming content to Shorts,” he said.
