WhatsApp Bans Over 2 Million Accounts In India In October In Crackdown Against 'Abuse'

In a bid to continue its crackdown against online abusers and wrongdoers, Meta-owned WhatsApp has banned more than 2 million Indian accounts in October.

New Delhi: In a bid to continue its crackdown against online abusers and wrongdoers, Meta-owned WhatsApp (formerly Facebook) has banned more than 2 million Indian accounts, says the company's latest compliance report. WhatsApp's latest compliance report mentioned that the company banned 2,069,000 Indian accounts on the platform in the month of October.

In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, WhatsApp has published its fifth monthly report for the month of October, according to a WhatsApp spokesperson.

"In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, we've published our fifth monthly report for the month of October. This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp's own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform," a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement.

In its latest report, WhatsApp also mentioned it received 500 user reports spanning across account support (146), ban appeal (248), other support (42) and product support (53 each) and safety (11) during the said period.

"This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp's own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform. As captured in the latest monthly report, WhatsApp banned over 2 million accounts in the month of October," the Whatsapp spokesperson added.

During this period, 18 accounts were 'actioned' under the ban appeal category based on the reports received. WhatsApp explained that 'Accounts Actioned' denotes reports where it took remedial action based on the report.
