Used Genuine Apple Parts Can Now Be Repaired As Re-Used, Will Offer Full Functionality & Security As New

As per the press release from Apple, modifications to their repair program will commence with specific iPhone models later this year.

Apple is set to make the lives of iPhone users easier and more cost-effective. It has broadened its repair possibilities for iPhones by endorsing the use of pre-owned parts. Apple has announced that customers and independent repair providers will be able to utilise pre-owned Apple parts in their repairs. Apple also mentioned that the used and authentic parts will now enjoy the same full functionality and security afforded by the original factory calibration.

Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus while talking about this said, “For the last two years, teams across Apple have been innovating on product design and manufacturing to support repairs with used Apple parts that won’t compromise users’ safety, security, or privacy. With this latest expansion to our repair program, we’re excited to be adding even more choice and convenience for our customers, while helping to extend the life of our products and their parts.”

Modifications To Arrive Later This Year

As per the press release from Apple, modifications to their repair program will commence with specific iPhone models later this year. However, in a statement to The Washington Post, the technology giant confirmed that these new guidelines will initially pertain to components for iPhone 15 models and newer, encompassing screens, batteries, cameras, and biometric sensors utilised for Face ID or Touch ID.

Apple mentioned that in order to streamline the repair procedure, both customers and service providers will no longer be required to furnish a device's serial number when ordering repair parts. Additionally, the company intends to extend the Activation Lock feature to iPhone components to prevent the reuse of parts from a stolen iPhone. Essentially, if a device undergoing repair detects that a part was sourced from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode activated, the calibration functionalities of that part will be restricted.
