These Google Pixel Phones Will Get 2 More Years Of OS Updates

Under this extended support plan, the Pixel 6 will remain updated through Android 17, while the Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold are set to receive updates up to Android 18, projected to roll out in 2027.

Unlike many Android manufacturers that often fall short of their software update commitments, Google has taken a commendable step in extending software support for its Pixel devices. Initially, the company promised 3 years of OS updates and 5 years of security patches for the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold. However, in a recent policy change, Google announced an additional two years of OS updates for these devices. This means users of the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold can now expect 5 years of both OS updates and security patches from their respective launch dates.

Under this extended support plan, the Pixel 6 will remain updated through Android 17, while the Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold are set to receive updates up to Android 18, projected to roll out in 2027.

Notably, Google has not included the Pixel Tablet in this revised policy, leaving it with the originally promised 3 years of OS updates as stated during its launch announcement. This change underscores Google’s commitment to enhancing the longevity and value of its flagship Pixel devices.

Which Google Pixel Devices Will Get Extended Support For OS Updates

  • Pixel Fold
  • Pixel 7a
  • Pixel 7 Pro
  • Pixel 7
  • Pixel 6a
  • Pixel 6 Pro
  • Pixel 6

For those unfamiliar, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series come with an impressive commitment of 7 years of OS updates and security patches. The upcoming Pixel 9a is also expected to benefit from the same extended software support. Additionally, Google has revealed that Android 16 will break from its usual release timeline, with a major update planned for the second quarter of 2025, followed by a minor update in the fourth quarter of the same year.

Traditionally, Google releases new Android versions in the third or fourth quarter annually. To provide some historical context, the last time Google deviated from its year-end release pattern was with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which launched in mid-2012. This shift underscores a notable change in Google’s approach to its Android update cycle.
