Apple Users In India, 91 Other Countries Targeted By Pegasus-Like Spyware. Here's How You Can Detect

The detection of Pegasus and otehr spyware is possible through the Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT). Read on to find out more.

Apple has issued warnings to users in 92 countries, including India, about the potential infiltration of their iPhones by sophisticated spyware, including the infamous Pegasus malware developed by Israel's NSO Group. This action represents Apple's ongoing efforts to safeguard its users from clandestine cyber attacks that compromise personal security.

The Cupertino giant, which refrained from pinpointing the origins of these cyber threats, had previously alerted prominent political figures in India — spanning various parties including Shashi Tharoor of Congress, Raghav Chadha of AAP, and Mahua Moitra of TMC — about the risks of state-sponsored spyware attacks on their communication devices.

Despite earlier speculations, Apple maintains its stance of not associating these cyber threats with any government entity, a position it adopted after discussions with Indian authorities.

What Did Apple Say?

Notifications regarding the potential security breach were dispatched to affected individuals in India at around 12:30 am IST on Thursday, as per reports from The Indian Express.

“Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-. This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do. Although it’s never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has high confidence in this warning — please take it seriously,” Apple said in the email.

Apple's communication urged users to exercise caution by avoiding links and attachments from unknown or suspicious sources. The specifics behind the issuance of these warnings remain undisclosed by Apple, citing concerns that revealing too much information might aid attackers in refining their methods to avoid detection.

The spotlight also falls on the Pegasus malware, highlighted in Apple's notifications as a tool utilised for targeting individuals globally.

How To Detect If Your Phone Is Affected By Pegasus

Pegasus is known for its advanced capabilities that render it undetectable by conventional anti-malware solutions. However, the detection of such spyware is possible through the Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT), although the complexity of this process limits its accessibility primarily to cybersecurity experts.

If you still wish to figure it out, it's highly advised to reach out to any tech or cybersecurity that you know (and trust) to check things out for you.

While the reach of Pegasus's spy operations is alarming, its high operational costs mean that ordinary individuals are less likely to be targeted. The spyware's deployment is typically reserved for individuals with significant political, journalistic, or social influence. Apple's proactive
