Tamil Nadu Records Zero COVID-19 Deaths For The First Time In Two Years

The state recorded 112 new coronavirus cases and zero deaths on Friday. 

Chennai: Tamil Nadu recorded zero coronavirus deaths for the first time in the past two years on Friday as the state recorded 112 new coronavirus cases and zero deaths on Friday. 

To date, the state has reported 38,023 COVID-19 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020. TN Health Secretary Radhakrishnan said, "There were zero COVID-19 deaths in Tamil Nadu on Friday and cases have also decreased gradually. Until the next advice of experts, people should follow the protocols without fail. I appeal to people to take vaccines without fail."

On Friday, among the 112 new coronavirus cases, the highest number of cases were reported from Chennai since 42 patients tested positive for the virus. After Chennai, Coimbatore (13) recorded the next highest number of cases and closely followed by Chengalpattu (12). The remaining districts recorded lesser than 10 or no cases.

The districts that reported zero cases include Ariyalur, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Kanyakumari, Karur, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Ranipet, Sivagangai, Theni, Tirupattur, Thoothukudi and Villupuram.

The state has 1,461 active coronavirus cases overall.

The state reported the first death of a person due to COVID-19 in Government Rajaji General Hospital in Madurai on March 25, 2020. A 54-year-old businessman with comorbidities had died due to the infection despite isolation and treatment.

Till now, the state has witnessed the highest single-day death toll of up to 493 deaths on May 30, 2021, during the second wave of the pandemic. 

According to doctors, deaths were mostly reported among patients with comorbidities including BP, diabetes, and thyroid.

In the third wave, fatalities were high among unvaccinated people.

Even studies showed that people who received both doses of vaccine required lesser intensive care when compared to the unvaccinated lot.
