Cyclone Michaung: TN CM Stalin Writes To PM Modi Seeking Rs 5,060 Cr Central Assistance

It is said that the letter by Tamil Nadu CM Stalin will be handed over to PM Modi by MP TR Baalu in New Delhi.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin wrote to PM Modi seeking an interim relief of Rs 5,060 crore from the Centre in the wake of damages caused by Cyclone Michaung. In the letter, Stalin outlined the extensive damage inflicted by the "unprecedented" rainfall triggered by the cyclone in the northern districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet.

It is said that the letter by CM Stalin will be handed over to PM Modi by MP TR Baalu in New Delhi.

In a press release, Tamil Nadu government said, "Especially, the damage is severe in areas under the Corporation of Chennai. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and public buildings have suffered severe damage. The livelihood of lakhs of people has been affected. Explaining these in detail, CM Stalin has written to PM Modi, seeking an interim relief of Rs 5,060 crore under different heads." 

"The work to evaluate the impact of Cyclone Michaung has begun. Once the evaluation is completed, a detailed report will be prepared on the destruction. Additional relief will be sought later," it said.

TN CM also sought the central team to visit Tamil Nadu and to assess the damage.

Chief Minister M K Stalin visited some of the affected areas, distributing food and essential commodities to those sheltered at a relief center in the city. He inspected the activities undertaken by the city civic body to drain water and wrote to the Centre, seeking an interim flood relief of Rs 5,060 crore to address the situation.

Many users on the social media site 'X' shared videos of residential localities still being surrounded by stagnant water, claiming many residents were stuck inside. The hashtag #Velachery was trending on the microblogging site. The power supply had not resumed in parts of the city including Kilpauk, Velachery, Madipakkam, Perungudi and Perumbakkam.
