Chennai: Man Nabbed For Possessing Cannabis Dies In Police Custody

The deceased Vignesh already had two theft cases pending against him. 

Chennai: A man nabbed by Secretariat Colony police for possessing ganja and knife on Monday night passed away in the custody of police on Tuesday. The police said, minutes before death the arrested person had breakfast but soon vomited and suffered seizures. However, they denied of manhandling him.

On Monday night, while police were frisking the commuters, a man identified as Vignesh and his associate were found to possess ganja. Once police questioned them, the duo allegedly threatened them with a knife, according to a report on Times of India.

The police immediately nabbed the duo and took them to the station. 

However, on Tuesday, Vignesh vomited after having breakfast and suffered seizures at the station. He was rushed to a hospital nearby but his health condition continued to deteriorate.

The police then took him to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead, said the report. 

On the other hand, a police officer said, the police did not manhandle anyone. They said, a special team intercepted an autorickshaw with Vignesh and his associate G Suresh, who is a painter in Triplicane. They found a foot-long knife and started to question them but as the duo did not have an answer they nabbed them.

Vignesh also has two theft cases pending against him. 

Meanwhile, a judicial magistrate probe has been ordered into the death of Vignesh and his body has been sent for autopsy.
