Tamil Nadu Flags Reduction In Cauvery Water Release By Karnataka, Seeks Centre's Intervention

Duraimurugan is also set to fly to New Delhi to meet Union Jal Sakthi Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department wrote to Cauvery Water Management Authority to flag shortage in the share of Cauvery water released to Tamil Nadu. The Water Resources Department also requested Centre to direct Karnataka to release the actual share of Cauvery water to the state. On Monday, Tamil Nadu Water Resources minister and senior DMK leader, S. Duraimurugan expressed his agony over Karnataka bringing up Mekedatu dam issue frequently.

In a letter, Duraimurugan said, "The Tamil Nadu side had expressed concern over the shortage of water released by Karnataka to the CWMA."

On June 16, Tamil Nadu in a meeting urged the CWMA to issue a direction to Karnataka to release the actual quantity of water from Cauvery to the state of Tamil Nadu, said the minister adding that they also flagged deficit of Cauvery waters for the month of June during the CWMA meeting of June 30.

Yet again, the Minister reiterated that Tamil Nadu would not allow the construction of the Mekedatu dam across Cauvery. The Minister said that the construction would affect agriculture in the state.

He also said that the state would fight the case against the construction of a dam at Mekedatu across the Cauvery in the Supreme Court. He added that strong arguments would be raised when the case comes for hearing.

Meanwhile, Duraimurugan is also set to fly to New Delhi to meet Union Jal Sakthi Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Wednesday. During the meeting, it is expected that Duraimurugan will request the Centre to not give the nod for the Karnataka government's plan to build a dam at Mekedatu.

He is also likely to flag the issue that Tamil Nadu is yet to get its due share of Cauvery water for June month.
