Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary Notified As 17th Wildlife Reserve In TN

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government notified 68,640 hectares Reserve Forest area as 'Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary' in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts on Tuesday. The newly notified sanctuary is the 17th Wildlife Sanctuary in the state. 

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu CM Stalin said, "I'm happy to announce that the GoTN has notified 'Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary' as the 17th Wildlife Sanctuary in TN. This significant step along with the TN Green Climate Company's missions will go a long way in conserving the rich biodiversity of our State."

Tamil Nadu government notified the sanctuary after an announcement on April 25. The announcement said that the forest area in Anchetty, Urigam and Jawalagiri ranges spread across 478 sq km will be declared as a wildlife sanctuary. 

The sanctuary falling under the regions including Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts measuring 68,640 hectares is vital for elephant habitation in South India. 

The sanctuary also continues to Nilgiris biosphere reserve through Malai Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve along with Erode forest division of Tamil Nadu, according to DT Next.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu government notified Slender Loris Sanctuary. The Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary is set to come up in Karur and Dindigul districts, covering areas of Vedasandur, Dindigul East, and Natham taluks in Dindigul and Kadavur taluk in Karur. The sanctuary will be spread across 11,806 hectares.

The state government notified the establishment of the Kadavur Slender Loris sanctuary under Section 26 A(1)(b) of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
