Governor Vs Mamata In Bengal: Ananda Bose Declines CM's Request To Postpone Visit To Riot-Hit Murshidabad

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requested Governor CV Ananda Bose to postpone his visit to Murshidabad due to ongoing confidence-building measures after violence over the Waqf Amendment Act.

Days after violence in Murshidabad over the Waqf Amendment Act, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday urged Governor CV Ananda Bose to postpone his proposed visit to the conflict-hit district. Speaking from the state secretariat, Banerjee urged non-locals not to visit Murshidabad.

"I would appeal to the governor to wait for a few more days, as confidence-building measures are underway. The situation is normalising," PTI quoted her as saying.

CM Mamata said that she decided against visiting the affected areas presently to avoid triggering political one-upmanship.

According to news agency PTI, Governor Bose said that he intends to visit the district to make an objective assessment of the ground situation.

"I will certainly visit Murshidabad. I will go to the field to see for myself the realities. I will have an objective view of the matter. The situation has been brought under control. We should take further steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future. People from the area have requested a BSF camp there," he told reporters.

On Thursday, Sukanta Majumdar took a group of people, rendered homeless due to the riots, to the Raj Bhawan, where they narrated their ordeal to Governor C V Ananda Bose. They also requested the governor to ensure permanent central force security arrangements for their safety, jobs, and financial compensation.

The victims, who have been living in a relief camp after allegedly being attacked and driven out of their homes, told the governor how their belongings were looted and houses, shops, and properties set on fire, forcing them to flee with the help of the central forces. Choking with emotion, they demanded the setting up of a permanent BSF camp in the area to ensure their safety and prevent further violence. They also urged the governor to help them secure government jobs, besides ensuring monetary compensation so that they can rebuild their lives.
